Exercise Can Benefit More Than Angioplasty for some Heart Disease Patients!

When a heart disease patient shows worsening symptoms or has a heart attack, angioplasty would probably be the first treatment most doctors will consider.

In angioplasty, a tiny balloon is used to flatten a blockage and a mesh tube (known as a stent) is utilized to prop the heart artery open. In fact, most angioplasties are done on a nonemergency basis to relieve a heart disease patient’s chest pain caused by clogged arteries that cut off the heart’s blood supply.

However, previous studies have shown that patients with heart disease could benefit from exercise, which works even better than surgical procedures for some patients. On August 30, 2009, several experts recommended that doctors should focus more on persuading their patients to exercise rather than simply doing angioplasties, at a meeting of the European Society of Cardiology.

According to a researcher from Klinikum Links der Weser in Bremen, Germany, it is never easy to convince people to exercise instead of undergoing an angioplasty, but exercise really works.

In his study in 2004, he found that nearly 90 percent of patients with heart disease were free from heart disease one year after they started to ride bikes regularly. On the other hand, only 70 percent of patients who had an angioplasty were free from heart disease after a year.

He is currently conducting a similar trial to confirm his initial findings that exercise is more effective than a surgical procedure for some heart patients.

Other experts seem to agree with what he proposes. A professor of medicine from Harvard University, who is not linked to the trial, argued that an angioplasty only opens up one vessel blockage but exercise does a lot more than fixing one little problem.

Exercise is a must for people for want to have a healthy body. People who exercise regularly could benefit in a number of ways.

First of all, exercise can lower bad cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL) while raising good cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL). It can not only help the body process sugar better but also improve the lining of blood vessels and get rid of waste material faster. Exercise does lower blood pressure and prevent building up of plaque in the arteries.

As shown in previous studies, about one-third of heart disease and stroke could be prevented if patients brisk walked for 2-and-a-half hours every week. This would mean that about 280,000 heart-related deaths could be prevented every year in the United States.

A professor of health sciences at Sweden's Kalmar University and spokesman for the European Society of Cardiology indicated that two-third of heart patients who had an angioplasty could probably benefit more by regularly exercising. Unfortunately, less than 20 percent of heart patients are doing about 30 minutes of moderate activity 5 times a week, the recommended amount of exercise.

He further criticized those doctors, who performed angioplasties on their patients without asking them to change their lifestyles, were not looking at the fundamental problem. As a matter of fact, most doctors admitted that persuading their patients to go for an angioplasty is much easier than persuading them to exercise.

Usually, it takes less than a day for a doctor to get a heart patient to accept angioplasty because patients can get their arteries fixed within a day. On the other hand, it may take months or even longer for patients to discover the benefits of exercise. And they have to exercise almost everyday, which many people hate to do or simply do not have the stamina to sustain such activity.
