Let Your Baby Having Enough Sleep!

There is no dispute that people, especially babies, should have sufficient sleep in order to avoid certain possible health issues.

Recently, a study by the Asia Pacific Paediatric Sleep Alliance (APPSA) and Johnson & Johnson indicated that babies from Singapore actually sleep about 40 minutes less. The finding also showed that Singapore babies sleep latter at 9.38pm on average and wake up earlier at 6am. The sleep habits of more than 25,000 babies, range from newborns to those aged 3, from 17 countries including 1,001 babies from Singapore were studied.

Hectic working lifestyles of Singapore parents could probably be the main reason for this phenomenon. Most mothers in Singapore work full-time. In order to accommodate these working mothers, babies have to sleep later and wake up earlier. It is not uncommon that mothers reach home around 8pm and they might keep the children up a little later so that they could spend time with them.

Secondly, babies have to be woken up prematurely from their sleep in the morning so that their parents can take them to daycare or infant centers, which operate from about 7am.

Nighttime arousals could be another cause that could lead to sleep problem for most babies. While it is normal for babies to wake up 3 to 6 times a night lasting for about 15 to 60 seconds. However, if they were awake for duration of 10 to 20 minutes each time, then their sleep would be greatly affected.

Just like a mother of a 1-year-old daughter said, getting her daughter to sleep is a nightmare to her because the little one would fuss, cry and whine for at least 2 hours before falling asleep. Moreover, her nap cannot last for more than 30 minutes.

It is important for growing babies to have both quantity and quality sleep. Failing to achieve this, babies and toddlers would become irritable, cranky and even hyperactive. Moreover, insufficient sleep can also lead to obesity later in life. As we know, obesity is closely associated with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and many other health hazards.

According to health experts, parents should establish a bedtime routine including 3 to 4 “quiet activities” lasting about 30 to 45 minutes before sleep in order to help their babies sleep better. For example, this could be a bath, massage, followed by a bedtime story and then a cuddle. Most importantly, the parents should ensure the routine remain the same for every night and at round the same time. By doing so, the biological clock of their babies is set to anticipate sleepiness at that time.
